La Bella Managua

I don’t know of any other places in Toronto that serve Nicaraguan cuisine, and I was pretty excited to try it for the first time. La Bella Managua cooks a variety of Nicaraguan food in big portions and with lots of flavour.

They have a selection of mains/platters that are epic. The platters come with a generous heaping of sides like beans and rice, plantains, and avocado-tomato salad. Their specialty platter is a fried whole snapper that’s crispy and not greasy at all. It could have been a tad less overdone, but it was still delicious and great value (around $14). We also ordered the shrimp and fish ceviche, which was decent but could have used more seafood.

The best part of the ceviche was scooping up its leftover salsa with the side of plantain chips. Bella Managua’s yucca was amazing. For those who aren’t familiar with it, yucca is a root vegetable that gives the potato a run for its money. The restaurants version is mushy on the inside, crispy on the outside, and really really good. The restaurant also has a good selection of vegetarian platters, and even if you’re not vegetarian, it’s worth getting one for the sweet caramelized plantains and the fried spanish cheese. Overall, it’s a solid place with good food, great portions, and decent price
